What is Biomass Energy? Before we get into the discussion of what biomass is let us define the term “biomass”. Biomass is any plant or animal matter used as raw fuel to generate heat or electricity. Some examples are wood, vegetable plants, waste from farms, or forests, and biomass from sewage treatment plants.
Biomass has many benefits over fossil fuels
and it is the only renewable energy that can be used for both energy generation and transportation. Because most biomass energy is generated from living things such as trees and plants, it is considered carbon neutral. By using biofuels such as these, scientists are attempting to decrease the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by over 80%. This is the primary reason that renewable energy is such a great idea because we can avoid the devastating effects of climate change.
Biomass is harvested sustainably
which means that there is no more cutting down of live plants and animals to make the fuel. Also, Biomass can be reused over again rather than used up like fossil fuels. Biomass is cleaner, uses less toxic chemicals, and does not release large amounts of carbon dioxide as other fossil fuels do. As such, Biomass plays an important role in helping to conserve our precious natural resources.
There are two main methods for harvesting biomass energy sources
through burning and utilization of existing forests. Burning is the more traditional method and involves splitting open the wood and using the ashes as fuel. This method of harvesting trees and turning them into biofuels can have negative effects on the surrounding environment if not done correctly and can result in the death of millions of trees. On the other hand, utilization of existing forests can result in the creation of carbon dioxide-free biomass which can then be utilized in power plants and other types of renewable energy sources.
Biomass can be used to create both diesel and ethanol
which can potentially play a large part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As such, biomass energy systems can play a large part in curbing global warming. Unfortunately, because wood is so plentiful, wood is the most valuable resource that can be utilized to produce biofuels and it is unlikely that wood will become obsolete any time soon. So, this presents a double opportunity for the people who want to use renewable energy sources like biomass energy: first, by utilizing wood efficiently and secondly, by filling landfills with Bio biomass.
If everyone in the world took
the time to collect and implement some Bioenergy projects on a grand scale, the planet would benefit greatly. However, as you can see, the problem is that many people are just not motivated enough to take the necessary steps required to convert their houses and business buildings to use only renewable energy. It seems that a lot of people want to believe the adage that “You can have everything in life that you want if you spend enough money.” Unfortunately, there is simply no other way to get all the fuel and power that your home needs except by tapping into the carbon and biomass that is already present within our environment.
